Research engineer (full time)

Where will you work? At Transport and Telecommunication Institute (TSI) Additive Lab, a brand-new r&d department in a robotics cluster of TSI. We are conducting both scientific and applied research and development in Wire-based metal additive manufacturing for large-scale parts. We are developing special software for this process and printing big things from Al-alloys, steels and other metal materials. We are using electric arc and laser as an energy source, robotic systems as kinematics, laser sensors as a scanning and measurements device.

What will you do? You will conduct experiments, evaluate results, make conclusions and participate in publications of your work. You will also print metal parts, design, improve and optimize printing algorithms and the printing process itself. There are a number of personal development opportunities – process engineering, software development, data analysis, automation and robotics engineering.

Mandatory skills – what do you need to know to start the conversation.

  • Basics of industrial robotics.
  • Basics of experiment planning and math statistics.
  • Basics of welding materials – steels, Al-alloys.
  • Good English – all communication, work and reports will be in English.

Additional useful skills – it’s good if you know some of these, but it’s not mandatory.

  • Welding technology, MIG\MAG process experience, CMT or other controlled droplet transfer technologies
  • Laser welding \ cutting technology.
  • Robotic welding equipment.
  • 3D printing experience (any method) – materials, hardware, software, process knowledge.
  • CAD \ CAM. Basic 3d designing experience in Inventor or SolidWorks or NX or you name it. Experience in CAM systems will be a benefit.
  • Functional software development. C++ or C# or Python or you name it. Console applications or desktop applications or web development experience.
  • Data analysis – basic knowledge of Machine Learning (and reinforced ML). Data filtration, sorting, storing.
  • Al-alloys welding experience – different series of AL-alloys (5xxx and 7xxx are the most relevant ones), special features of welding process, equipment and consumables.

Our benefits

  • Cool equipment. Brand new industrial robotic systems, laser machine, arc machine, laser sensors and many others. The lab is brand new, not a scratch on the machines yet.
  • Startup vibe. Minimum paperwork, minimum mandatory reports, maximum results. Flexible approach to work, interesting tasks to solve, unorthodox methods of solving them.
  • Worktrips, conferences. Trips across Europe, peer-reviewed publications. Opportunity to achieve Ph.D. degree.
  • Be one of the first in the world. There are not many people who are doing r&d in our area – you can be one of the few.

Our offer

  • Salary. Based on the interview, starting from 1700 Euro gross.
  • Work terms. Lab is located in TSI on Valērijas Seiles iela 1. 5\2 working week, 30 days paid vacation, employment contract.
  • Partially funded health insurance, family included.
  • 3-month test period with salary review after it, annual review and work terms reconsideration.

Comment. You think that requirements are too harsh? Don’t worry if you are not 100 % fit, you are still welcome to apply. We are doing something new here, you couldn’t possibly learn about this in school. All of the missing knowledge you will get during the work with the mentor’s help. Interested in this position? Send us your CV and Cover letter, let’s make something meaningful together.

Applications should be sent to pvad@tsi.lv by 23.05.2024.
