TSI Rector Attends Seminar on Sustainability and Responsible Business

Mr Juris Kanels, Rector of the Transport and Telecommunication Institute (TSI), who is also the Chairman of the Council of SJSC RIGA International Airport, made opening remarks at the Stakeholders Seminar of Riga Airport “Sustainable Development and Responsible Business”. Mr Talis Linkaits, Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia, addressed the seminar with welcoming remarks. The event was attended by the heads of our national aviation industry companies, representatives of various institutions and local authorities as well as experts.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Kanels stressed the importance of sustainability planning and its implementation in the aviation sector. Decisions taken, especially regarding the development of infrastructure, have extremely far-reaching economic, social and even political as well as environmental impacts. Consequently, any development projects in aviation must take into account the possible positive or negative effects, the possible long-term benefits or losses that may arise from these projects in the future. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the situation investigation, analysis of possible risks and modelling of various development options, and the Transport and Telecommunication Institute has already accumulated considerable experience in carrying out this kind of activity.

During the event, participants discussed industry trends and new business opportunities, sustainability and future prospects.

As previously reported, TSI educates and actively participates in the development of the industry and contributes to the development of companies in the sector. As evidence of this, TSI is now in its second year of offering a professional double degree programme in Aviation Management, developed in collaboration with the University of the West of England, UWE Bristol, considering the public interest in sustainable development. The topic of sustainability plays an essential role in the double degree master’s programme, both in aviation and international business. As part of the programme, students have 312 hours of professional practice at Riga Airport and other aviation companies.
