TSI Student and Alpine Skier Ilze Marta Bērziņa’s Experience at the Universiade

Ilze Marta Bērziņa, a second-year student of the bachelor’s prgramme Transport and Logistics at TSI, is not only dedicated to her studies but also an active alpine skier. Her journey into the sport began at the age of four when her father first put her on skis. “Since childhood, I’ve been passionate about skiing, and from the age of six, I’ve been training in a sports club. This sport gives me both physical challenges and the opportunity to explore the world” says Marta.

In January, Marta participated in the FISU Universiade in Turin, Italy, for the first time. The FISU Universiade is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes, held every two years. It brings together students from around the world to compete in various disciplines, promoting sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and academic values. Often referred to as the “University Olympics,” it serves as a platform for young talent to showcase their skills on a global stage. These competitions were a unique experience for her.”The opening ceremony was impressive – various performances and cultural elements created an unforgettable atmosphere” Marta recalls. At the Universiade, she competed in giant slalom and slalom, improving her scores and gaining valuable experience.

Combining studies and sports is not always easy, but Marta views it as a challenge. “Although it seemed difficult from an outside perspective, the flexible schedule at the university allows me to balance both of my priorities. It was harder in primary school when I often had to train after classes”.

Marta chose to study Logistics because the profession has been close to her heart since childhood — her father has worked in the field, sparking her fascination with its intricacies. After exploring all the logistics study options in Latvia, she found that the programme at TSI resonated with her the most, aligning perfectly with her aspirations.

In addition, Marta has another talent – she enjoys drawing, which provides a break from her intense sports and study routines. “Drawing has been my hobby since childhood; it’s my way of expressing creativity”.

Although alpine skiing and logistics seem like very different fields, Marta sees her future in both. “Combining sports and a profession will be challenging, but I plan to continue developing in logistics, just like my father,” she says.

Currently, Marta is preparing for her next competition and plans to participate in the Baltic Cup in March. Her goal is not only to achieve sporting success but also to continue advancing her knowledge and skills in logistics.

I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Universiade – it gave me unique experience, determination, and resilience to handle stress.

We are proud of Marta and wish her success both in sports and in her studies!
