Over the past week, TSI students of the Transport and Business Logistics programme visited the biggest enterprises of the transport and logistics industry in Latvia – Omniva, DHL, MileLogistics, MSC Shared Service Center Riga.
Students went on specialised facility and office tours, visited lectures and professional presentations, got a deeper understanding of work processes, got a taste of the future work environment and possibly met future colleagues and employers.
Director of Transport and Business Logistics programme, Lecturer, Mg. oec. Aleksandr Kotlar comments on the importance of such activities organised for students:
“We believe that in a contemporary environment students need to have close contact with business and industry representatives. These contacts are crucial for bachelor’s students in logistics for several reasons. It allows understanding industry practices, provides networking opportunities for the students, helps to build a bridge between theory and practice, and stimulates critical thinking and problem-solving by encountering logistics challenges and issues faced by businesses.
Therefore, TSI puts special emphasis on the development of practical skills, providing students with the opportunity to meet employers in Latvia during their studies.
This time, during the “week of visits”, meetings with the following companies were organised: OMNIVA, DHL, MILE LOGISTICS, MSC. During these meetings, our students had the opportunity to learn about:
- Companies’ organisations and positions in the industry
- Key job functions
- Commercial activities of the companies and success stories
- Development plans
- Operational process of warehousing activities, shipping and freight forwarding
- Companies’ thoughts and visions about logistics development in Latvia and the Baltic states
- Companies’ expectations from young logistics program graduates and university
