The objective of ALLIANCE project is to have advanced research and higher education institution in the field of transport in Latvia by linking Transport and Telecommunication Institute (TTI) with two internationally recognized research institutions – University of Thessaly (Greece) and Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (Germany). The ALLIANCE project’s purpose is to strengthen the scientific and technological capacity of TTI in research activities related to multimodal transport networks.

The ALLIANCE project is oriented to intermodal passenger and freight transportation systems, taking into account legal and organizational issues, interaction with other domains, such as spatial planning and economic development, identifying smart and sustainable solutions for achieving smooth and seamless transportation, and exploiting decision-making strategies, methodologies and techniques for assessing and evaluating the impact of these solutions on the transportation domain, as well as the economy and society.

The coordinator of the project, TTI is a national leader in research and education in the areas of transportation modelling, intelligent transportation systems, systems analysis of transportation systems and transportation analytics. Research is an integral part of the TTI mission and work. It is supported by Research Strategy, the purpose of which is to ensure that the Institute can continue to produce a significant volume of high quality work and respond to the rapidly changing environment in Latvia and worldwide in relation to research and its funding.

ALLIANCE will deliver a coherent educational/training program addressed to enhancing the knowledge of current and future researchers and professionals offering their services in Latvia and the wider region. The proposed approach covers both urban/interurban and passenger and freight interchanges. Developed to meet all needs, the program will cover the needs of post-graduate students and PhD candidates studying at TTI, through a set of courses offered as part of the existing graduate programs (Master of Social Sciences in Transport and Logistics, Doctoral Degree Programme “Telematics and Logistics”) through the ALLIANCE summer schools and other joint training schools and seminars running in parallel with established Conferences by the consortium members. It will also cover the need of those who are currently working on the profession, through a Life-Long Educational program, offered on-line through the ALLIANCE distance-learning platform.

ALLIANCE fully corresponds to the national priority of Latvia “Growth of the national economy” by strengthening research and facilitating knowledge transfer between higher education, science and the private sector. The proposed activities will result in stimulating and strengthening the scientific and technological capacity of Latvia and the raising of the profile of the research staff and their institution, by providing knowledge in the field of smart interconnecting sustainable transport networks, most optimal and applicable solutions for transport interchanges; in increased number of researchers and students in the field of transport. It will also facilitate stakeholder collaboration and the development of strong linkage among education, research and industry
